Lady in White
The Bride’s Inn Series
The premise behind Lady in White is an excellent concept. The old Bride’s Inn is said to be haunted by the Lady in White, a bride whose prospective groom allegedly paid a servant in the inn to trip her as she descended the grand staircase. After her death, the Lady in White wanders the halls of the inn ostensibly helping lovers to find the happiness she didn’t find.
The story is good and the characters are interesting. The problem in this story is with the pacing and progression of the story. Chernow doesn’t take the time necessary to truly develop the relationship between the hero and the heroine. This is disappointing since both characters are interesting and had a great deal of potential. However, the rushed nature of the relationship sends them from strangers to lovers in the matter of a few pages and the “love” between them seems to appear suddenly and simply comes off trite and insincere. Much of the story is told, not revealed or allowed to unfold for the reader.
